According to The Sun, Rafa Benitez is a keen on a reunion with former Chelsea colleague Juan Mata – permitting that the Newcastle boss remains at St James’ Park this summer, he would be set to do battle with a host of other clubs around Europe for the Spaniard’s signature.
The playmaker’s contract at Old Trafford expires in June, meaning anyone looking to acquire his services can do so for free – a prospect which surely entices Magpies owner Mike Ashley, although Mata’s wages could still prove a stumbling block, with the St James’ Park outfit still reluctant to pay their players the big bucks.
The 31-year-old has struggled with injuries in recent times making him a high-risk signing but, despite being in the twilight of his career, he still has one of the best eyes for a pass in the league so could also be a very high-reward addition if he can stay fit.
Mata has six goals and four assists to his name in 2018/19 and could stand out in a lesser side, but is the 5 ft 7 maestro worth the gamble for Newcastle? Football FanCast’s writers give their verdicts below…
Ben Goodwin
“I do not think Newcastle should move for Mata. At 31, he has spent the last few years struggling with various muscle problems and injuries, but more importantly, where would he fit? He cannot play in central midfield, and doesn’t have the pace required to play in the Ayoze Perez or Miguel Almiron roles. The Spaniard would demand a big salary and thus be a total waste of wages.”

“Whilst the prospect of signing a player of Mata’s quality will be incredibly exciting for Newcastle fans, you’ve got to question whether he suits Benitez’s style. For all of Almiron’s flair and quality, he possesses pace and tenacity to flourish for the ex-Liverpool boss and I don’t believe Mata does. A top player still but doesn’t match the club’s style enough to have any significant impact.”
Luke Glanville
“In my opinion, a Newcastle United move for Juan Mata would be a very smart one indeed. If they can get him on a free when his Red Devils contract ends in late June, it would be an absolutely sensational transfer. Mata has proved this season that he can still cut it at the highest level at a top club, therefore, there’s nothing to suggest he wouldn’t flourish at St. James’ Park. The 31-year-old would also be an inspirational figure around the dressing room, perhaps able to help Miguel Almiron become one of the best number tens in the Premier League with his guidance.”
Harry Sherlock
“Newcastle should avoid him like the plague. They have splashed £20m on Miguel Almiron in the past few months and he needs to be given the freedom to thrive in the No.10 role. Bringing in Mata would only muddy those waters and ensure that Almiron spends time on the bench. He is too good for that; Newcastle should look elsewhere.”
