Aitana Bonmati, the reigning Women's Ballon d'Or winner, has been hospitalised with less than a week until Euro 2025 begins.

Bonmati has been struck down by viral meningitis just days before her side take on Portugal in their tournament opener on Thursday. Coach Montse Tome was not sure when she would be well enough to return to action.

Tome said: "The doctors say that it is controlled. Talking about meningitis can be scary but it is controlled. Aitana will be admitted and there are no deadlines yet to know for how long."

Bonmati has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for Spain and played a huge role in their 2023 World Cup and 2024 Nations League victories. The reigning Ballon d'Or winner would be a huge miss for the tournament favourites should she be ruled out for a lengthy period of time.
