Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has claimed Manchester United have a “worrying” issue with David De Gea’s poor form.
What did he say?
De Gea endured a difficult campaign last season at both club and international level, and saw four errors lead to goals in the Premier League.
After conceding a rather soft winner to Crystal Palace in injury-time on Saturday, Murphy has revealed the Spain international’s poor form is a “worrying” sign for the Red Devils.

He said: “A worrying thing for United is David De Gea. He should have saved the winner, comfortably. It’s another mistake and it’s happening too often.
“It doesn’t matter how good he can be, we know how good he can be, but there’s something not right. It’s a problem for Man United.”
Decline?
At 28, De Gea is arguably approaching the peak years in the career of a goalkeeper. But his performances over the course of the past twelve months have indicated a worrying slip in standards. The Spaniard is making basic errors that are simply compounding the side’s miseries at the moment.
Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested the goalkeeper could be set for a bumper new deal at Old Trafford, and cynics could rightly suggest he has maybe taken his eye off the ball. Have all the years of transfer speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid finally taken their toll on him mentally?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had the opportunity to give De Gea genuine competition between the sticks this season with the returning Dean Henderson. Instead, the impressive England U21 international was loaned out to Sheffield United again.
Whilst a season in top-flight football is no doubt a great learning experience for Henderson, keeping him at Old Trafford to compete with De Gea may have benefited the latter. Now, the shot-stopper simply knows however many mistakes he makes, he will remain United’s number one.
Murphy has certainly got a point, and Solskjaer’s Henderson decision may well have made the goalkeeping situation at the club worse, not better.
