Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported exclusively by Training Ground Guru that Matt Crocker – who previously worked as Academy Manager at St Mary’s – will be returning to the club as the new Director of Football Operations.
As aforesaid, Crocker worked as the Saints’ Academy Manager, overseeing a golden period of seven years that saw the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers rise through the ranks.
Southampton have been looking for a new Director of Football ever since Ross Wilson joined Rangers midway through October, and it now looks as if the Saints have found a replacement.
Crocker – who Training Ground Guru detail as the driving force behind England’s recent success at age group level – will leave his role as the FA’s Head of Coaching and Development having overseen World Cup wins for England U17 and U20, while the U19s won the European Championships.
Given his past accomplishments, this really does seem like a shrewd move by Southampton.
Let’s take a look at how the supporters on Twitter reacted to the news…
