Delap had been in great form through the 2024/25 Premier League season for Ipswich Town as the former Manchester City striker scored 12 goals for an underperforming side. Chelsea were among a number of other top clubs interested in the 22-year-old; however, the Blues were able to strike a £30 million transfer with the Tractor Boys ahead of the Club World Cup.

Delap also attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United, Newcastle United and Arsenal, as well as Chelsea. The striker has now revealed that he had a chat with Blues superstar Cole, who played with Delap through the Manchester City youth system, before deciding on a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Speaking to club media, Delap talked about the familiar faces at Chelsea: "Obviously, I spent a lot of time with Cole [Palmer] and Romeo [Lavia] when I was young, growing up. I played many games with them and, you know, enjoyed it; and then Levi [Colwill], I played against him hundreds of times as a kid, we're similar age. So, I'm really excited to come here and start working with them.
When asked if he reached out to any of the players, he added: "Yeah, I spoke to them, of course. I've asked them for advice and they've told me how great of a place it is."
WHAT NEXT FOR DELAP?
Chelsea were quick to snap up Delap this summer as Enzo Marseca wanted the highly-rated striker on the plane to the United States later this month. The Blues will be looking to go deep into the Club World Cup, but do not enter the competition as one of the favourites.
