According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are set to begin talks with Keinan Davis over a new contract at the club.
What’s the word?
The report claims that Villa boss Dean Smith is a massive admirer of Davis and therefore he wants him to be tied down to a longer deal as his contract is currently set to expire at the end of this current season.
Smith rejected interest in the striker over the summer, and it appears the 21-year-old has quickly become the second choice behind club-record signing Wesley Moraes.
Davis has come on as a substitute in two of their four Premier League games while also being allowed to lead the line in the Carabao Cup, per Transfermarkt.
The 6 foot 3 forward has only scored four goals in 47 appearances since joining the club from Biggleswade Town in 2015.
Wise move all round
Villa lack clear options in attack so it would be somewhat smart to keep hold of their strikers considering he is just one of three at the club.
The other, who is yet to be mentioned, is Jonathan Kodjia – he’s been absent recently through injury, so it has left Smith a bit short-changed upfront.
Despite playing so many games for Villa already in his young career, it’s easy to forget that he’s just 21 and on top of that, still only played five matches in their playoff-winning campaign.
With Wesley the only viable option ahead of him in the pecking order, Davis is surely only an injury away from gaining some minutes.
With that in mind, a new deal for Davis would certainly be a sensible decision and they must do everything they can to tie him down.
After all, if Smith believes he has developed substantially under his coaching, he must be trusted.
